“God’s in Control” ?
Abducted, raped and murdered, a mother and her daughter were savagely victimized by evil several years ago. Somehow the Mother survived the bullet that was fired into the back of her head. Tragically, her daughter did not survive the assault. National attention was drawn to this crime and Christian television broadcasted an interview with the Mother as testimony to God’s amazing Grace. Indeed, to have survived and to be able to forgive was truly miraculous. However, the interview turned blasphemous when the questions drifted to, “why did God do this”? Obviously, He didn’t.
Overly simplistic thinking victimizes God as an accomplice to, or worse, the cause of things He had nothing to do with. He is even more grieved by these things than we are. It is vital that the broad-brush stroke of, “God’s in control thinking,” be tempered with the rest of the truth. The world we are supposed to be reaching is repelled by such ignorance, as well they should be. We all should be.
